Space Weather: Should I be concerned?

When most of us think about the Sun, we think about hot summer days, holiday weekends, and outdoor family cookouts. We know we need to take normal, ongoing precautions when we spend time outside. Things like applying sunscreen, wearing proper sunglasses, and putting on wide-brimmed hats are just basic, common-sense protections from the Sun's daily heat.
However, the events unfolding over this July 4th holiday weekend remind us that solar storms are a step or three beyond just standard sunburn concerns.
If you look at the Heads-Up notice on our Alert page today, you will see warnings for a major Space Weather Alert. This is not a reason to panic, but it is a fascinating and important reminder that we live in a universe controlled by a powerful Creator, and our modern infrastructure is more fragile than we think.
The Story Behind the Alert
On June 30, 2026, a massive eruption known as an X-class solar flare exploded from a highly active region on the Sun's surface. This major eruption launched a full-halo Coronal Mass Ejection, which is a giant cloud of solar plasma and magnetic fields, traveling directly along the path toward Earth.
Immediately after this big explosion, the Sun entered an unseasonably aggressive state. It acted like a machine gun, firing off an additional 10 to 13 solar flares within a single 24-hour window. This barrage included eight moderate M-class flares. The strongest of these explosions already triggered a radio blackout over the Pacific Ocean west of Hawaii, while others caused separate communication dropouts over the Atlantic Ocean, North Africa, and the Philippine Sea.
Because of this intense activity, the official Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a Moderate Geomagnetic Storm Watch. The primary cloud of solar material is modeled to collide with Earth's magnetic field late tomorrow, July 3, or early on Saturday, July 4.
What This Means for Earth
When this solar storm hits our planet's magnetic shield, it will not hurt you physically. You do not need to hide in a basement from the radiation. However, it can cause some real disruptions to the technology we rely on every day.
First, it is expected to cause high-frequency radio blackouts on the daylight side of the Earth. Second, infrastructure located far to the north faces risks of power-grid fluctuations and local voltage alarms. Satellites orbiting the Earth may also experience glitches or extra drag from the atmosphere.
On a beautiful note, the storm is expected to push the northern lights much farther south than usual. People living across northern U.S. states, potentially as far south as Illinois and Oregon, might get to see a spectacular aurora display over the holiday weekend.
How to Build Electronic Resilience
Because we want to be wise stewards who are not caught off guard, it helps to understand what to do during these alerts. For our friends and emergency operators who use high-frequency ham radios for backup coordination, this solar storm can cause severe signal loss or complete day-side radio blackouts.
If you are monitoring the airwaves on July 4th, do not assume your radio equipment is broken when the bands suddenly go completely quiet. It is just the atmosphere reacting to the Sun. Instead, shift your messages to local VHF or UHF line-of-sight relays that do not depend on the upper atmosphere to bounce signals.
Because these geomagnetic storms can cause unwanted electrical currents to travel through long wires, it is a prudent rule of thumb to keep your sensitive backup receivers completely disconnected from long, ungrounded external wire antennas when you are not actively using them.
Always maintain accurate, handwritten offline logs for your communications. Finally, make sure your battery-backed power banks and backup charging stations are physically unplugged from the commercial grid. This simple step isolates your equipment and protects it from potential voltage surges on the main power lines.

We do not look at the skies with fear, but with sober-minded wisdom. By understanding how space weather works, we can protect our tools, keep our heads clear, and remain a calm source of leadership and support for our households and neighbors when modern systems blink.
